How Much Does a Sprinkler System Cost to Run?

Annual sprinkler cost is mostly a water-use and local-rate question. It changes with irrigated area, plant demand, climate, schedule, system efficiency, leaks, the length of the season, and the utility’s billing structure. A national average is unlikely to match a particular yard.

A transparent calculation

Start with:

annual water charge = billed irrigation volume × local volumetric rate + applicable fixed or seasonal charges

Use the utility’s current rate schedule and check whether irrigation water is billed for sewer service. Do not assume that every gallon used outdoors avoids a sewer charge or that every utility uses the same seasonal structure. Add electricity, controller connectivity if applicable, inspections, repairs, seasonal startup, winterization, and maintenance as separate operating lines.

Calgary’s 2026 irrigation guidance gives a local example of CAD 3.86 per cubic metre. That figure is useful only as a Calgary, date-specific rate example; it is not a Canadian average. A local scenario should use the property’s rate, season, area, and expected schedule.

What changes water use

  • irrigated area and whether turf is serving a real use such as play or traffic;
  • plant type, soil, slope, weather, and establishment stage;
  • spray, rotor, drip, or mixed delivery and the system’s coverage;
  • controller programming, seasonal adjustment, and weather or soil-moisture inputs;
  • leaks, overspray, pressure problems, clogged heads, and poor zone separation;
  • local watering restrictions and allowed days or times.

EPA reports lower water use for microirrigation and WaterSense-labeled controllers in their stated contexts. Those figures are conditional, not a promise of household savings. A controller cannot compensate for a buried leak or a zone that applies water unevenly.

Model scenarios, not a single payback

For a new system, model a low-, typical-, and high-demand season using local volume assumptions. For an upgrade, compare the existing bill or metered use with a conservative reduction scenario and include installation, maintenance, and any rebate conditions. Keep U.S. and Canadian scenarios in their own currencies rather than converting one market’s costs.

Vancouver illustrates why local rules matter: watering stages, address parity, plant types, methods, times, and fines can change by season and restriction stage. Check the current local authority before using a published schedule. The active evidence does not support a universal annual water cost, but it does support a clear method for building one from local inputs.

A worked local-rate example

At the Calgary example rate, 20 cubic metres of billed irrigation water would be CAD 77.20 before any fixed, seasonal, or other applicable charges. The arithmetic is illustrative, not a prediction of household use; substitute the property’s metered volume and current local rate before using it for a budget.
