Softscape is the living and loose landscape layer: lawn, soil, plants, shrubs, trees, mulch, and related irrigation adjustments. It does not automatically include patios, retaining walls, drainage, major grading, lighting, outdoor structures, or landscape-architect design. Those scopes can dominate a quote and should be separated.
Build the project from components
A full-yard softscape proposal may include demolition and removal, cleanup, soil preparation, topsoil or amendments, lawn, shrubs and trees, mulch or groundcover, irrigation adjustments, delivery, disposal, planting, and establishment care. Ask for a plan or quantity schedule rather than accepting an undefined “landscaping” allowance.
The main cost pressures are plant quantity and size, soil condition, slopes, buried debris, access, disposal, delivery, crew and equipment, irrigation readiness, and whether mature trees or established planting must be protected. Partial refreshes can be more economical than full replacement, but the quote should show what remains and how the new work will transition.
Water and function

Angi’s 2026 specialist landscaping material reports a U.S. softscaping signal around USD 800 to USD 10,000, but consumer landscaping guides can mix softscape with hardscape, grading, design, lighting, and structures. Treat the range as an attributed orientation signal, not a comparable project budget. The active evidence does not establish a current Canadian equivalent; do not convert the U.S. signal into CAD.

Request separate lines for removal, soil, plants, trees, mulch, lawn, irrigation, delivery, disposal, labor, establishment visits, and warranty or replacement terms. Price drainage, major grading, retaining, hardscape, structures, and design separately. If a water-wise conversion is the main decision, compare it with xeriscaping, sod, and irrigation options using the same area, preparation, and restoration assumptions.
