Historic Wood Siding and Exterior Trim: Repair, Patch, Reproduce, or Replace?
Deteriorated siding or trim may reflect failed paint, trapped moisture, leaking details, poor drainage, insects, or a local impact. Replacing every board because the surface looks tired can remove sound historic material and leave the cause unresolved. Diagnose the decay before comparing repair with replacement.
Diagnose the cause of decay
Peeling paint, soft wood, open joints, staining, failed caulk, and localized rot can result from different problems. Check roof edges, flashing, gutters, splashback, ground contact, window and door details, ventilation, and coating history. Replacing boards without correcting the water path can move the failure to the new material. A paint failure may need preparation and moisture correction rather than whole-elevation replacement.
