Repointing replaces deteriorated mortar joints; it does not automatically solve the reason the masonry is failing. Leaking roofs or gutters, rising damp, settlement, movement, exposure, and incompatible earlier repairs may continue to damage the wall after the joints are renewed. Diagnose the wall before choosing mortar
Joint loss can be a symptom of water entry, freeze-thaw exposure, movement, settlement, salt, poor drainage, or an earlier incompatible repair. Record where deterioration occurs, whether units are cracking or spalling, how the wall sheds water, and whether the problem is concentrated near roofs, openings, foundations, or ground contact. Repointing cannot correct every one of those causes.
Historic masonry may use mortar that is softer or more permeable than modern cement-rich products. The right objective is not to choose the hardest material. A compatible repair remains part of a building system; its long-term value depends on the roof, drainage, openings, and maintenance around it.
Make the scope legible to future repairs
Keep the mortar analysis, accepted sample, repair map, photographs, and completed areas together. Note where joints were intentionally left, where units were repaired, and which water-management work was completed separately. A future mason should be able to understand the treatment without assuming that every elevation has the same material or exposure.
