How Much Does an Electrician Service Call Cost?

An electrician service call is the first paid visit when the fault, repair, or installation scope is not yet fully known. In the U.S., a specialist cost guide reports roughly $100–$200 for a typical service call or first-hour charge, with hourly billing and urgent work varying by market. A current Canadian specialist guide reports about CAD $100–$200 for a first-hour observation and CAD $80–$150 per hour for residential work. These are market observations, not regulated fees or quotes. A visit can cost more when travel, access, after-hours response, testing, materials, or a second visit is involved.

What you are paying for

The first visit commonly combines several layers:

  • dispatch, travel, and business overhead;
  • a minimum charge or first hour of labor;
  • visual assessment and non-invasive diagnosis;
  • time spent locating the affected circuit or equipment;
  • small parts that the electrician carries and is authorized to install;
  • a written recommendation or quote for work that cannot be completed during the visit.

The service-call price does not automatically include a complete repair. Some electricians apply the diagnostic fee to same-day labor; others charge the visit separately. A quote may also exclude permits, utility coordination, finish repair, specialty equipment, and return visits.

The cheapest published hourly rate is not necessarily the cheapest visit. A contractor with a higher rate and a shorter minimum may cost less for a one-device repair. Compare the expected first invoice, not just the advertised hourly number.

Scheduled versus urgent work

Routine work can often be grouped into one appointment: several loose-feeling switches, a failed receptacle, or a list of small inspection corrections. Emergency dispatch may be justified when the symptom suggests overheating, arcing, exposed damage, or a loss of power affecting a critical need. A burning-plastic odor, sparks, scorching, or a hot electrical device should not be treated as an ordinary convenience repair; the safe response is to stop using the affected equipment and seek qualified professional help, with emergency services used when there is an active fire or immediate danger.

Do not assume an urgent fee guarantees immediate access, a complete diagnosis, or same-day parts. Ask whether the visit is an assessment only, what happens if the electrician cannot safely work on the system, and how a return visit is priced.

What changes the cost of the first visit

The symptom may be simple, but the diagnostic path may not be. Cost commonly moves with:

  • Location and travel: Remote properties, long distances, parking limits, and difficult access add time.
  • Visibility: An accessible receptacle is different from a fault hidden behind finished walls or ceilings.
  • System age: Fuse equipment, obsolete panels, aluminum branch wiring, and altered wiring may require more cautious assessment.
  • Number of symptoms: Flicker throughout a home or multiple dead circuits needs a broader pattern review than one failed device.
  • Availability: Nights, weekends, holidays, and storm periods reduce scheduling flexibility.
  • Parts and equipment: Specialty breakers, test equipment, replacement boxes, or repair materials may require a later visit.

These drivers interact. A remote, occupied home with a concealed intermittent fault may consume more diagnostic time and still end with an allowance rather than a fixed repair price. A nearby standard outlet with accessible wiring may be resolved during the minimum visit.

Questions to ask before booking

Ask for the service-call or diagnostic fee, minimum time, hourly rate after the minimum, travel policy, after-hours pricing, parts markup, and whether the fee is credited against a quoted repair. Confirm whether the electrician is being asked to diagnose one symptom or inspect the broader system. Describe what you observed, when it occurs, what equipment is affected, and whether there is heat, odor, smoke, or visible damage.

Other provinces, territories, states, utilities, and municipalities administer electrical work differently. The contractor should identify any permit, notification, inspection, or utility step that belongs in the project scope.

How to budget when the fault is unknown

Use three planning cases:

  • Contained visit: A device, accessible connection, or diagnosed breaker issue is repaired during the initial appointment.
  • Defined follow-up: The electrician identifies a branch-circuit, panel, or wiring repair and returns with parts or a written scope.
  • System escalation: The symptom reveals a panel, service, legacy-wiring, or hidden-access project that needs a separate quote.

Do not multiply the first-hour price by an assumed number of hours and call that a final estimate. The service call buys information as well as labor. The useful question is whether that information narrows the next decision enough to compare a repair, a larger project, or a safe temporary boundary.

The first visit as an information purchase

When the fault is unknown, compare the service call by the information it should produce. A useful visit identifies the affected circuit or equipment, records the observed condition, distinguishes a repair from a symptom, and tells you what remains unknown. A vague invoice that only says “checked electrical” is less useful than a slightly higher-priced visit with a location, diagnosis, and next-step scope.

Ask whether the electrician can complete a bounded repair if the cause is found, or whether the appointment is strictly diagnostic. If parts may be needed, ask for the likely return-visit charge and whether the original diagnostic fee is credited. This prevents a low advertised minimum from becoming two unplanned visits.

A practical booking brief

Before calling, write down the symptom, affected locations, time pattern, recent renovations, equipment operating at the time, panel or wiring type if already documented, and any heat, odor, sparks, water, smoke, or storm context. This helps the electrician choose the right appointment length without asking you to perform tests. Never open electrical equipment to obtain the information.

For a planned list of small work, group only defined tasks: replace two ordinary switches, assess one dead outlet, and correct a documented inspection item are clearer than “look at the house.” Keep urgent symptoms separate so routine scheduling does not obscure a safety concern.

How to compare the total

Normalize the first invoice as call-out, included time, diagnosis, parts, tax, and return work. A contractor who includes travel and the first hour may look expensive beside an hourly-only rate that starts after a separate dispatch fee. For a remote home, include travel and access in the expected case. For a routine list, compare one mobilization against the cost of separate visits.

The service call is worthwhile when it narrows the decision and produces a safe, traceable next step. It is not a substitute for a project quote when the work expands into a panel, service, rewiring, or concealed-access project.
