Shower Tile Replacement Cost
Retiling a shower is more than a tile-material purchase. Removal can reveal the substrate or waterproofing, and the new tile must work around drains, controls, niches, corners, benches, and the enclosure. Budget the wet-area assembly and the visible finish separately.
Bounded planning example
For a hypothetical 60-square-foot shower, a U.S. planning case might use $9,000 for tile removal and replacement while retaining a credible assembly, or $20,000 when substrate and waterproofing are rebuilt. A separate Canadian case could use C$12,000 and C$26,000. These are rounded scope assumptions, not market averages or currency conversions; the retained-assembly case applies only when its condition is supportable.
What changes the price
| Driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Removal | Tile layers, mortar, backer, dust control, disposal, and access |
| Tile | Material, size, waste, pattern, cuts, trim, and lead time |
| Details | Niches, corners, benches, transitions, penetrations, and drain edges |
| Substrate | Level, sound backing versus replacement or repair |
| Waterproofing | Retained, inspected, selectively repaired, or fully rebuilt assembly |
| Coordination | Fixtures, door, plumbing, floor, and finish restoration |
Tile itself is not the waterproofing layer. A manufacturer system handbook describes the membrane, seams, corners, penetrations, drains, substrate, and transitions as an assembly. Ask the contractor what is being retained and how it will be evaluated after removal.
Selective replacement versus full retiling
Selective tile replacement can make sense when the damage is bounded, matching material is available, and the underlying assembly remains sound. It becomes less attractive when tile is loose across a broad area, the substrate moves or is damaged, the waterproofing is known to have failed, or the replacement cannot create reliable transitions.
Full retiling may still be finish work, or it may be part of a complete waterproofing rebuild. Those are different quotes. Request separate lines for demolition, substrate, waterproofing, tile, grout, and enclosure removal or replacement.
Cost and maintenance choices
Complex patterns, small-format tile, heavy cuts, and custom niches add labor. A simpler layout may reduce installation time without weakening the water-control assembly. Product choice also affects cleaning and future repair, but no material class is universally better; installation quality and maintenance remain important.
When to choose another article
If the concern is deteriorated grout without evidence of a failed assembly, compare regrouting versus retiling. If the pan or membrane is the concern, see shower waterproofing rebuild cost. If the entire room is changing, use the shower remodel guide.
The useful tile budget explains what is visible, what is behind it, which assembly is retained, and what discovery would require a broader rebuild.
