Tub and Shower Surround Replacement Cost
Replacing a tub or shower surround can be a focused project when the tub, pan, plumbing, and surrounding structure remain sound. It becomes a larger wet-area rebuild when removal exposes damaged substrate or the existing waterproofing cannot be credibly retained. Panel and tile prices are only part of the installed scope.

Panel systems versus tile
Panels or sheets can reduce some custom finish work and may offer fewer surface joints, but product fit, corners, penetrations, trim, and the tub flange still need careful installation. Tile offers more finish and layout flexibility but requires a defined substrate, waterproofing approach, setting work, grout, and detailed transitions. Neither material is universally the safer or longer-lived choice.
Quote the assembly
Request separate lines for protection, removal, disposal, substrate, backer, waterproofing, panels or tile, trim, corners, niches, control and pipe penetrations, tub flange, fixtures, door, sealant, cleanup, and concealed damage. State whether the tub or shower pan is being retained and how the interface is handled.
A system-specific handbook treats membranes, seams, corners, penetrations, drains, substrates, and transitions as an assembly. New wall panels or tile do not prove that the retained layer is sound. Ask what inspection supports retention and what condition triggers replacement.
When the scope expands
Costs rise when old finishes are bonded heavily, access is limited, the room is above a finished space, the tub or pan is damaged, the wall is out of plane, pipes or controls move, or framing and subfloor have been wet. A quote should use a defined allowance with photos and approval rules for those discoveries.
