How Much Does Electrical Outlet Replacement Cost?

U.S. specialist observations place a standard existing-outlet replacement around $80–$150, with broader single-outlet examples around $80–$200. A Canadian specialist guide reports CAD $80–$200 for representative outlet replacement. These figures assume an existing box and serviceable wiring. A service-call minimum may matter more than the device, and heat, damaged conductors, an undersized box, aluminum wiring, or protection changes can turn replacement into repair.

Replacement versus a larger repair

A routine replacement uses an existing location. It should not be treated as routine when the device is warm, scorched, loose, buzzing, sparking, wet, or associated with an odor or repeated trip. CPSC identifies warm faceplates and burning-plastic odor as warning signs in its aluminum-wiring guidance and directs untrained people away from wiring inspection.

The electrician may find a damaged receptacle, loose connection, deteriorated conductors, a box problem, an ungrounded circuit, aluminum termination, or a failed protective device. Ask for the condition and proposed correction rather than authorizing a cosmetic swap.

Simple replacement: The box and conductors are sound, the device is ordinary and compatible, and the electrician confirms no wider issue. Budget the minimum visit, device, labor, and testing.

Protection replacement: A GFCI or other specialty device is involved. The function and local applicability must be verified; the price includes correct device selection and testing, not just a faceplate.

Wiring escalation: Heat, damaged conductors, an unstable box, aluminum wiring, or a repeated trip is found. The quote may include connection repair, circuit work, access, and restoration.

How to compare quotes

Ask whether the quote includes diagnosis, device, compatible equipment, box repair, wiring, grounding, protection, access, testing, permit/inspection, and wall repair. A low material price does not answer whether the circuit condition was assessed.

For Canadian installations, product certification and local installation requirements must be checked for the actual device and jurisdiction. Ontario’s ESA guidance distinguishes GFCI, AFCI, and tamper-resistant purposes; it is not a complete national code inventory.

The replacement decision is complete when the device and the condition behind it are both accounted for. If the outlet is hot or damaged, price the cause—not only the new receptacle.

Replacement, consolidation, or rewire

If several ordinary outlets are worn but the wiring is serviceable, one planned visit may reduce duplicated minimum charges. If the devices are symptoms of an ungrounded, aluminum, overloaded, or damaged circuit, consolidation does not solve the underlying decision. Ask the electrician to group the quote by location and by cause.

A homeowner who is renovating may choose to replace devices now while access is open, but the scope should say whether boxes, conductors, protection, and grounding are included. Avoid paying for a cosmetic refresh that leaves a known compatibility or heat concern.

When a unit price is useful

A per-outlet allowance is useful only after the electrician has confirmed that the locations share the same condition and access. Ten accessible, ordinary receptacles can be a straightforward batch; ten outlets spread across finished rooms, exterior walls, or legacy circuits are not necessarily ten copies of the same job. Ask for the first-location assumption and the incremental price for each additional location.

If the quote is based on homeowner-supplied devices, confirm the exact model, certification, configuration, and return responsibility. A device that does not suit the box, circuit, load, or protection arrangement can create a second mobilization. If an outlet is part of a sale, insurance request, or inspection report, request a completion note that identifies the corrected locations and any condition left outside the work.

The practical decision is whether the installation is a contained device change or the first visible point in a circuit problem. Price the latter as a diagnosis and correction, not as a larger quantity of inexpensive receptacles.

Manage product choice

Provide the exact device type and intended use, especially for GFCI, AFCI, outdoor, dimming, or tamper-resistant equipment. Product certification and installation requirements are jurisdictional. A cheap homeowner-supplied device can create a return visit if it is incompatible or lacks the required approval.

The useful total is service call, device, diagnosis, wiring/box correction, testing, and restoration. The device price is only the narrowest case.

Decide whether bundling reduces cost or hides scope

Bundling standard device replacements can reduce duplicated service-call minimums when the locations are known and safe. It is less useful when the list combines ordinary outlets with warm, loose, scorched, wet, legacy, GFCI, AFCI, or circuit-tripping conditions. Ask for a location-by-location count and a separate diagnosis allowance so one difficult device does not silently change the price of every other outlet.

During renovation, consider whether boxes, circuit mapping, grounding, protection, and access should be corrected while the wall is open. In a finished home, a narrow replacement may avoid unnecessary restoration, but only when the condition behind the device is established. For an inspection or insurer request, the deliverable should identify the work performed and any retained condition rather than simply say “outlets replaced.”

Confirm the condition before bundling

A normal replacement can be grouped with other safe, defined devices to reduce service-call minimums. A warm, scorched, loose, wet, buzzing, or sparking outlet needs a cause assessment before it is bundled. Ask for the electrician’s stop point if the box, conductor, grounding, or protection condition is different from the assumption.

If the homeowner is changing many outlets during renovation, price boxes, circuit grounding, protection, and access while the wall is open. For a short horizon, a documented device replacement can be adequate when the system is sound. For long-term ownership, preserve circuit labels and record any retained legacy condition.

Check the full device count

Ask for a count by standard, GFCI, AFCI, outdoor, or specialty outlet rather than one blended allowance. Confirm whether faceplates, box repair, grounding observations, circuit labeling, and testing are included. If a quote changes because the final device is different, the reason should be visible in material and labor rather than hidden in a general upgrade line.

Replacing devices during an open renovation can be efficient because access is already paid for. In a finished home, a narrow replacement may be better than opening walls unless the condition requires it. The decision turns on condition and future access, not on how inexpensive the receptacle looks.
