Wet Room Conversion Cost
A wet room is a bathroom configuration in which water management extends beyond a conventional shower footprint. The floor, walls, drainage, transitions, enclosure, and ventilation must be considered as a coordinated system. It can be more expensive than installing a normal shower because the waterproofing and drainage boundary is larger.
Wet room versus a standard shower
A standard shower may keep splash and water management within a pan, enclosure, or defined wet area. A wet room deliberately relies on broader floor and wall protection and controlled drainage. The labels vary by market, so ask the installer to describe the actual assembly rather than relying on the term alone.

Why the existing floor matters
A curbless or wet-room floor needs a workable drainage plane. In an existing home, joist depth, slab elevation, door thresholds, adjacent flooring, and access below can limit the options. A nominally level entry may require a floor recess, a raised bathroom floor, a linear or point drain, or a different layout. The design and structural consequences need qualified project review.
Waterproofing is not a finish choice
A manufacturer handbook for one bonded system treats the membrane, seams, corners, penetrations, drains, substrate, and transitions as connected parts of the assembly. That documentation is strong for that system but does not establish one universal method. Specify the proposed system and follow its instructions; do not infer performance from tile or grout alone.
Ventilation and operating conditions
EPA guidance recommends directing bathroom exhaust outdoors for moisture control. Canadian NRCan guidance also recommends outdoor bathroom exhaust as a minimum approach while noting that whole-house ventilation may be more effective. Exhaust-only systems can depressurize a home and affect combustion gases, so fuel-burning appliances and broader ventilation strategy deserve qualified review.
Compare alternatives
Price a conventional shower, low-threshold shower, and wet-room concept against the user’s access and water-management goals. Keep structural changes, design, permits, and independent ventilation work visible. A wet room is worth considering when its functional outcome justifies the wider assembly and the existing building can support a controlled drainage and waterproofing design.
