Confirm the load and drainage detail
Channel drains are most useful for intercepting water at a surface crossing, such as a patio edge, walkway, garage approach, or threshold. They are not a universal yard-drainage solution: broad ponding, poor overall grade, or water with no workable receiving route may call for regrading, a swale, another collection system, or a site assessment instead. Channel drains beside garages, driveways, patios, and thresholds face different loads and installation conditions. Ask for the grate load class or product rating appropriate to the location, the channel body, end caps, outlet, cleanout or access, base or concrete support, and the finished slope. A light landscape product should not be assumed suitable for vehicle traffic.
The channel needs a reliable discharge route. If it connects to a yard line, dry well, storm system, or other outlet, verify the configuration, maintenance access, and local approval. A drain that is level but has no usable outlet can collect water without solving the problem. Ask how the trench will connect to existing paving and how the joint will be sealed or maintained.
Construction sequencing matters when the route crosses an entrance or primary walkway. Include temporary access, demolition, concrete or surface replacement, disposal, and restoration. Request a test before final closure and keep the product information and outlet map for later cleaning.

New construction and retrofit are different budgets
In new hardscape, the channel can be coordinated with the planned surface elevation, base, edge, and outlet. A retrofit may require sawcutting or removing concrete, lifting pavers, breaking a joint, protecting a threshold, and rebuilding the surrounding surface so the channel is properly supported. The visible grate can look identical in both projects while the labor and restoration scopes are very different.
Ask whether the proposed drain is intended to intercept water before it reaches a door, collect runoff at the bottom of a slope, or protect a garage or patio edge. The location affects the finished elevation and may create a transition that needs careful detailing. A channel installed too high can leave water on the approach; one installed too low can collect sediment or create an awkward edge.
Make load and climate assumptions explicit
The grate and channel should be appropriate for the actual setting, including pedestrian traffic, carts, bicycles, vehicles, snow equipment, or occasional service loads. Product names alone do not establish compatibility. Ask for the manufacturer’s applicable rating or installation requirement when the location has more than pedestrian use, and keep that information with the project record.
Freeze, sediment, and deicing exposure can affect maintenance and replacement. Ask how the channel will be cleaned, how the outlet will be protected, and what parts can be replaced without removing the surrounding surface. If the system must connect to a larger yard or stormwater route, price that route and its local verification at the same time. A grate is not a solution when the downstream system is blocked, undersized, or unavailable.
Compare the complete retrofit boundary
For each bid, mark the demolition line, channel length, outlet pipe, support material, surface restoration, temporary access, testing, taxes, and change conditions. Ask for an alternative if the existing elevation or subgrade does not allow the proposed detail. This makes a channel-drain decision comparable with regrading, a swale, or a broader patio-drainage repair.
