Steam Shower Installation Cost

A residential steam shower adds a generator and controls to an enclosed wet-area project. The budget therefore includes more than the generator: enclosure, waterproofing, vapor and moisture management, electrical capacity, plumbing, controls, ventilation, finishes, access, and future maintenance all matter.

For a hypothetical existing shower rebuilt around a selected steam generator, a U.S. planning case might use $25,000 for the generator and controls ($5,000), enclosure and waterproofing ($9,000), utilities and ventilation review ($5,000), finishes and access ($4,000), and commissioning ($2,000). Start with the equipment model

Steam equipment varies by manufacturer and model. Ask for the exact generator, control, electrical requirements, plumbing connections, service access, and installation instructions. Do not publish or rely on a generic wattage, circuit, enclosure, or control claim when the model has not been selected.

The Schluter handbook documents a product-specific system that includes steam-shower applications; it does not make one waterproofing or vapor-management method universal. Follow the selected system’s instructions and obtain qualified review for compatibility and local requirements.

Why the project can expand

The generator may need a suitable location and service access. The existing panel may not have usable capacity. The enclosure may require a new ceiling or door arrangement. The shower may need a complete waterproofing rebuild rather than a finish update. A ventilation change can require new ducting and exterior termination, especially where moisture control is already inadequate.

NRCan guidance warns that exhaust-only ventilation can depressurize a home and potentially reverse combustion-gas flow from fuel-burning appliances. This is a safety boundary, not a DIY design instruction. Have a qualified professional review homes with combustion appliances, unusual airtightness, or a broader ventilation change.

Compare the economic alternatives

Price an ordinary shower remodel, a steam-ready wet-area rebuild, and the steam system as separate scenarios. Include ongoing cleaning, service access, controls, electricity, water, and potential replacement—not just installation. A steam shower is financially credible when the household will use it, the room can support the system, and the utility and moisture requirements are resolved before finishes close the work.

The final quote should state the model, required utilities, enclosure and waterproofing assumptions, ventilation plan, service access, and every excluded upgrade.
