Define the excavation before comparing unit rates
A yard excavation quote should state the footprint, expected depth, material to be removed, equipment, access, staging, hauling, disposal, dewatering assumptions, and what will be left ready for the next trade. Digging for a French drain, patio base, retaining wall, grading correction, or utility route can look similar on the surface but has a different finished requirement.

Before digging, confirm utility-locate responsibility, property boundaries, access rights, protection of foundations and retaining walls, and temporary drainage. The excavation may expose a condition that changes the final grade or requires engineering. Ask for a written change process and do not treat an allowance for “hard digging” as a guaranteed total.
The finished handoff matters. Specify whether the contractor will leave compacted subgrade, a drainage trench, a wall footing, a patio base, rough grade, or restored landscape. Photograph exposed conditions and buried routes before they are covered. A clear record avoids paying to rediscover the same depth, material, or pipe alignment during later work.
Do not compare excavation units without comparing the scope
Excavation may be priced by linear foot, cubic yard, area, equipment time, or a fixed project amount. Those units are not interchangeable unless the quote also describes the quantity, depth, geometry, material assumptions, access, and finished condition. A narrow drainage trench, a grading cut across a yard, excavation for a retaining-wall base, and broad earthwork can have very different equipment, handling, and restoration needs even when a quoted unit appears similar.
Ask whether a unit price covers only digging or also loading, hauling, disposal, imported material, dewatering allowances, backfill, compaction, and surface repair. A fixed excavation amount may bundle several of those items, while a low unit allowance may leave them as change-order exposure. Compare like with like before deciding that one contractor’s per-foot or per-yard figure is lower.
Excavation is often one part of a larger project
The excavation line is rarely the complete price for a drainage, grading, retaining-wall, or hardscape project. The next scope may include pipe or aggregate, an outlet, a wall base and drainage system, imported fill, hardscape base, finish grading, planting, or restoration. A proposal should show the handoff between excavation and the trade that follows it, including who owns disposal, temporary water control, and the response to unsuitable material.
For quote comparisons, request the assumed quantity and depth, access and equipment method, soil or fill profile, rock and groundwater treatment, spoil destination, imported material, utility and private-service assumptions, restoration boundary, and written changed-condition process. That checklist is more useful than a unit rate alone and helps identify whether two bids describe the same deliverable.

Define what happens to the excavated material
“Excavate” can end with a rough trench, a prepared subgrade, a wall footprint, a drainage route, or a surface ready for restoration. The price depends on which endpoint the contractor must deliver. Soil that can be reused on the lot is a different cost problem from wet spoil, rock, debris, contaminated material, or material that must be loaded and hauled away. Imported fill may then be needed to replace unsuitable soil or achieve the planned grade.
Ask whether the estimate is based on measured volume, equipment time, a project allowance, or an assumed soil profile. State who provides disposal locations, haul distance, traffic control, and restoration. A low excavation total can exclude the work that makes the area usable again.
Access and sequencing affect the method
An excavator may not reach a side yard, and hand excavation can increase labor when walls, foundations, utilities, fences, trees, or hardscape constrain the route. Staging material and protecting an occupied home can add temporary work. If excavation is part of a retaining wall, drainage, patio, or grading project, sequence the work so that open ground does not redirect water toward the building or neighboring property.
Before excavation, confirm the applicable utility-locate process, including private services that may not be covered by a public locate. Ontario guidance is a jurisdiction-specific example that addresses valid locates, notification, private services, soil conditions, and appropriate excavation controls; it is not a universal rule for every U.S. or Canadian property. The contractor should own the safe means and methods, while the homeowner verifies the local process and access rights.

The proposal should state whether the final condition is compacted subgrade, rough grade, a drainage trench, a foundation or wall excavation, a base ready for hardscape, or a restored surface. Ask for photographs of exposed conditions and the route before it is covered. When a finding changes the plan, stop and obtain a written scope and price adjustment instead of allowing an undefined “hard digging” allowance to become the project total.
