Find the failure point before reopening the trench

Ask whether the problem is a blocked inlet, crushed or disconnected pipe, sediment-filled stone, missing filter separation, an outlet that is submerged, or water entering from a source the original system never addressed. A camera, flush, test excavation, or observation during rain may be appropriate, but the method should match the suspected failure and local conditions.

Repair pricing should state whether the trench is being opened at one point, along its full length, or at the outlet. Confirm how the removed aggregate and soil will be separated, whether usable surface material can be restored, and how the system will be tested before closure. If the same water source remains, a cleanout alone is not a complete repair.

Protect future access

Record cleanout locations, pipe route, outlet, stone and pipe specifications, and photographs before backfill. Keep the route clear of future decks, trees, fences, or planting that would make the next inspection expensive. A repair that restores flow but removes all access may only defer the next cost.

  • Cleaning is appropriate only when the failure is accessible and consistent with a serviceable blockage.
  • Repeated failure can indicate design, sediment, outlet, soil, or roof-runoff problems.
  • Compare repair components instead of accepting a generic per-foot replacement price.
  • A yard French drain and a foundation drainage system are different scopes.

Diagnose the failure without reopening the whole trench

Begin with the parts that can be observed or accessed: inlets, cleanouts, inspection points, visible outlets, and the area where water should emerge. Photographs during rain can show whether water reaches the system and whether the outlet responds. A contractor may also compare the current flow pattern with the original route. These observations narrow the repair question, but a flow test or visual inspection does not prove that an underground pipe is clear or structurally sound.

If the drain is blocked near an accessible cleanout, service may be a smaller scope than excavation. If the outlet is buried, the pipe has settled or crushed, or the trench never had a workable fall, the repair may require opening part of the route. If the original system is undersized, receives roof runoff it was not designed for, or sends water into saturated soil, replacing the same detail may only repeat the failure.

Decide what evidence justifies replacement

Ask the contractor to show which finding supports cleaning, a localized repair, partial replacement, or a new design. Request the repair limit, expected remaining service, outlet plan, and restoration for each option. A full replacement may be sensible when access to the failure is poor and several parts of the system are uncertain, but “replace everything” should still identify the cause it is intended to correct.

Keep any temporary surface-water measure separate from permanent work. If water is affecting a foundation, retaining wall, or slope, obtain the relevant qualified evaluation rather than treating a French-drain repair as a complete structural or below-grade diagnosis.

Compare a targeted repair with a rebuilt route

A targeted repair can make sense when inspection identifies a reachable, limited failure and the rest of the route, water source, and outlet remain credible. A larger replacement may be worth pricing when failures recur, the pipe route cannot be serviced without repeated disruption, the original outlet is unsuitable, or the surrounding grade still sends water to the same area. Neither choice should be made from a surface symptom alone.

Ask for two scopes where the condition is uncertain: one that identifies and opens the suspected failure, and one that restores a complete route with the needed inlets, conveyance, outlet, access, and surface work. Each proposal should say what happens if excavation finds sediment-filled aggregate, damaged pipe, rock, utilities, groundwater, or an unworkable outlet. This makes the cost of diagnosis, restoration, and avoided repeat excavation visible instead of comparing a cleanout price with a replacement total.
