Concrete Driveway Resurfacing Cost: Overlay or Full Replacement?
Concrete resurfacing can renew a sound substrate, but an overlay cannot reliably correct settlement, active movement, poor drainage, saturation, or a structurally weak slab.
Check the substrate first
The existing concrete must be evaluated for movement, delamination, moisture, weak areas, cracks, joint condition, and elevation. A clean-looking surface is not proof that the slab can support a new system.
When an overlay may fit

The warranty should state what happens with existing cracks, future movement, water, salts, freeze-thaw exposure, and adhesion. A lower material price with limited preparation is not comparable with a complete substrate treatment.
Make the decision evidence-based
Photograph the surface in different weather, note recurring water and winter damage, and disclose planned loads. Do not accept a permanent-result promise based only on a product brochure. If the contractor cannot explain why the concrete is stable, compare replacement or repair before resurfacing.

A simple project has a stable surface and limited preparation. A typical project includes crack and patch work, mechanical preparation, a defined overlay system, finish, curing, and protection. A complex project includes widespread repair, difficult edges, drainage or height transitions, old coating removal, access restrictions, or a choice between partial and full replacement.
Compare the overlay’s price with repair, section replacement, and a new driveway on the same area and preparation assumptions. Consider disruption, expected recurrence, future maintenance, appearance, and whether the overlay preserves the right slope and clearances. Do not rely on an age cutoff alone.
Proposal checklist

Decide when replacement is safer
Ask how many areas are moving, whether cracks continue through the slab, whether the base is saturated or undermined, and whether the existing grades already direct water toward the house or garage. A surface system may be useful for a stable slab with limited defects; it is not a general answer to settlement or drainage. A good result is an appearance improvement that remains compatible with the substrate and the next repair decision, not a coating used to postpone a known failure.
Have the contractor state the inspection and acceptance points: substrate approval, preparation, application, cure, final drainage, and reopening. If the slab changes after work, document the location and weather before authorizing another coat. A clear record helps distinguish a finish issue from movement, moisture, or base failure.
